Surveys
Overview:
In today’s final, chilling lab we will explore some web-based polling and survey options. These free tools will allow you to gather data and sort your results as needed.
Objectives:
- To create web-based polls and surveys using free web-based applications
- To gather feedback from your peers regarding your work in this course
The More You Know:
Polls
If you find yourself in need of a simple one-question poll (essentially a one question survey), there are several easy-to-use websites that allow you create and embed them. There are four example polls below–please take them all and answer honestly. Your answers will help us in planning next year’s course.
If, however, you would like to ask more than one question then you will need to use a survey tool such as Google Forms or Survey Monkey. Before diving into the tools, though, take a minute to read through the following tips on survey design:
Surveys
Google Docs
As we saw earlier in the course, you can create surveys and polls using a Google Form (which keeps your results in a Google Spreadsheet). As an advanced tip, check out the video at right to see how to take your results and create charts and graphs that update in real time as submissions are made (note: the real “meat” of the video starts around 2:45).
Survey Monkey
Survey Monkey is a popular choice for easy survey creation (despite their cheeky name). If you have never used Survey Monkey before then you may find it helpful to read through their “How to Create a Survey” help document.
Your Performance Tasks:
You have two tasks to complete for this lab:
- In your groups, create a web-based survey to gather your classmates’ feedback on your video research project. You may use any survey tool that you want but think carefully about what questions you can ask to generate feedback that will be useful for you (suggested topics include your overall website presentation, use of video to convey a message, use of video editing to craft an engaging clip, design of interview protocols, etc.).
- Take the surveys from the other three groups in class
Due Date:
Please have your survey created and available by 1:30 TODAY. We ask that you post a link to your survey on your VRP website. Please complete the other groups’ surveys by 8:30 am Friday.
